What does building electrification require in California?
Four things before any equipment: panel capacity, load calculations, code compliance, and utility coordination. Electrifying heat, kitchens, or vehicle fleets adds load the existing service may not carry, and a service upgrade is often the schedule's long pole. Solar and battery storage change that math by offsetting new load onsite, so the service is sized around real demand. Why does electrification start at the panel?
Every electrified load (heat pumps, electric kitchens, EV chargers) lands on the same service entrance the building already has. The first engineering question is whether that panel and that utility service can carry the new load under code, and the answer comes from a load calculation, not a guess. Get it wrong and the project stalls at plan check or, worse, at the utility queue.
Code compliance and utility coordination run in parallel: the AHJ reviews the design, and the utility decides whether your service gets upgraded (a process measured in months, which is why it starts first).
How do solar and storage change the service size?
A service sized for worst-case simultaneous demand is an expensive service. Onsite solar carries load through the day, and a battery clips the peaks that would otherwise set the service requirement. Together they can keep an electrification project inside the existing service, or shrink the upgrade it needs. Managed EV charging does the same for fleets, scheduling around the building's peaks.
